Recollections with Alvin Lucier:
Ostrava 2005

I remember our first encounter in Ostrava (Czech Republic) in 2005 - we had met in the elevator of the hotel in which the artists of the Ostrava Days Festival were hosted. We both read "The History of the Siege of Lisbon" by Jose Saramago and discussed the form, the absence of punctuation and the rhythm of the text. At the time, the quartet had not yet had the chance to play his music, but Lucier's aesthetic quickly captivated us. Shortly thereafter, we adopted his works into our own repertoire.

Concerts at Sala Rossa and Église du Gesù (Montréal)

In 2015, I invited Alvin Lucier to our series “American Maverickspresented in collaboration with Suoni per il Popolo and Le Vivier for several years. Alvin was already advanced in age and we weren’t sure if he could make the journey. Not only did he come (in a car with his spouse Wendy), but he also gave a memorable performance of “Bird and Person Dyning” in a packed Sala Rossa. He expressed great joy when he discovered the restaurant Robin des bois on St-Laurent street, pronouncing the few French words he recognized with a perfect Québécois accent!

Of course, the event granted us the chance to work with his quartets in depth, sculpting the sound and the possibilities the beautiful acoustic of l’Église du Gesù in another unparalleled concert with Suoni 2015, Double-Portrait: Alvin Lucier — Pauline Oliveros, where the two were seated together in the front row, thick as thieves.

Recording of the album Navigations in the summer of 2020

When
Alvin asked us in the winter of 2020 to publish the concert performed in Montréal in 2015, we decided to dedicate a brand new recording for the occasion. We intended to pay him a visit in April 2020 and record in a studio close to his neighbourhood. However, the circumstances had decided otherwise, and had rather given us the pleasure of working with the sound engineer Carl Talbot, at Ste-Théodésie Church in Calixa-Lavallé!

It’s an honor and joy to have been invited by Alvin to join the project “I am sitting in a room” from the Issue Project Room in New York to celebrate his 90th birthday. It is with deep emotion that I recorded my own version in March with Frédéric LeBel and Morgane Parent in l’église du Gesù, right in front of the bench where Pauline and Alvin sat a few years back... I am very proud to be a part of this celebration with several artists whom I admire.

“Few top tier string quartets have been as devoted to experimental music as the Montréal ensemble Quatuor Bozzini, who routinely bring a stunning rigour to everything they play, whether the radical work of Swiss composer Jürg Frey or key Canadian figures such as Linda Catlin Smith, Cassandra Miller and Martin Arnold. This new album focuses on the music of Alvin Lucier, one of the most enduring and consequential sonic explorers of the last half-century, and the group's razor sharp precision and empathy helps bring the gripping psychoacoustics of his research into dynamic relief.” - Peter Margasak, The Wire (UK), April 2021
